Online Art Exhibit Raises Awareness about Chronic Pain
Wednesday, October 8, 2008 19:36When you’re in pain, being creative and artistic can be like a good dose of Vitamin I (ibuprofen) or therapy–helping you feel better emotionally, and getting your mind off the pain. Art’s also a great way to express how you feel in ways that don’t need words.
Some of the greatest artists have suffered crippling or chronic injuries. Their pain becomes inspiration for their creativity, and they used their art to communicate and overcome their pain. Frida Kahlo is one example of a popular, celebrated artist who suffered and painted, and gained recognition and a form of transcendence from her work.
Now, a new online exhibit is raising awareness about chronic pain by displaying art works created by normal people, who have suffered some form of chronic pain, whether from injury, disease, surgery, or genetic conditions. That’s part of their banner at the top of the page.
The Pain Exhibit’s mission is to increase awareness about the prevalence of chronic pain sufferers, and to give people a venue for communicating with each other through art. The works are up for viewing online and new submissions are being accepted.
Take a look and maybe you will find yourself reflected there.
Do you make art to work through pain? If so, post a link in the comments below to share it with us, or submit to the Pain Exhibit.
