How to Choose the Right Ergonomic Hand Tools

One of the key issues in ergonomics is that one size never fits all. The petite, five foot tall woman (that’s me) has vastly different needs than the broad-shouldered 6’5″ man. We have different sizes, weights, different abilities to grasp, different shapes and spaces between our fingers and our shoulders.

But most product manufacturers don’t take this into account — they slap a shiny “ergonomic!” sticker and people who want more comfortable tools buy them. But how do you know if a tool really fits you, and what type of tool you need for a job?

For starters, consider what you’ll use it for, and try it out for a while in the store, holding it in different positions to make sure it feels right. Then, follow these great detailed guidelines from Usernomics:

*Use tools with a soft padded grip, or add a soft cover around a tool with a hard handle
*Avoid tools with finger grooves– they don’t fit anyone!
*Use spring-loaded tools that automatically return to an open position
*Use clamps or grips, instead of forcefully holding a tool for a long time
*Use tools that let you hold your wrist in a straight position
